M16 to M36: reading a waterproof connector part number

Two parts of a part number decide whether an order comes back correct: the shell code that fixes the housing, and the layout code that fixes how many power and signal contacts sit inside it.

M25 two-pin quick-lock sealed connector, plug and socket pair — Specification.

A sealed connector code is read in two halves. The shell code decides the housing: the coupling, the panel cut-out and the cable entry. The layout code decides what sits inside it — how many contacts, and how they split between power and signal. Change either half and you are ordering a different part.

In this catalog the two halves are written as one string, which is why M25 2+0 and M25 2+0+3 are separate rows at separate prices rather than one part with options.

The shell code comes first

The family holds M16, M19, M20, M23, M25, M28 and M36 shells, alongside the DX-DY and HL sealed series. Within a shell the parts differ by whether they are a plug, a socket, a panel-mount socket or a plug-and-socket pair, and by the cable range the gland accepts.

  • Same shell, different halves is normal: an M25 plug does not mate with an M28 socket.
  • Panel-mount versions carry a flange or a lock nut, so the cut-out is part of the specification, not an accessory.
  • A pair listed as plug-and-socket is one part number for both halves; a plug on its own is half of a connection.

The layout code is what buyers get wrong

The figures after the shell describe the contact arrangement. They are not a pin count to be added up against a datasheet — they are an ordering code, and the same shell carries several of them. The layouts published in this family are:

  • 2+0 — two power contacts, no signal group. Carried by the M20, M25 and M28 shells.
  • 2+0+3 and 2+1+3 — two power contacts plus a three-contact signal group, on the M23 and M25 shells.
  • 2+1+5 — two power contacts and a five-contact signal group, on the M23 and M25 shells.
  • 2+3 — two power contacts and a three-contact group, on the M19 and M20 shells.
  • 2+4, 2+5 and 2+6 — widening signal groups, on the M25, M28 and M36 shells.

Sealing is stated per part, not per series

Most parts in the family are listed at IP67, and the ones that are carry it in the model name or on the part page. Some listings in the same shell series publish no IP figure at all — a plain M19 2+3 among them. That cell stays blank on the part page rather than being filled with the figure the rest of the series uses, because a gasket that was never confirmed is the kind of detail that fails a customer's incoming inspection.

If the application needs the rating in writing, ask for it against the exact model number before the order, not after.

The price spread is a category signal

Parts in this family run from $0.38 to $30.67 per piece, EXW Yueqing, and the ends of that range are different kinds of product rather than different quantities of the same thing. At the bottom is a two-pin sealed flat plug; at the top a 2+6 shell that carries a full signal group. Panel-mount sockets and the battery-swap HL parts sit in the upper half.

The per-part minimum is printed on each page: 50 pieces on most parts in this family, 100 on the small signal plugs. Volume breaks are quoted at 500, 1,000 and 5,000 pieces.

What to put in the inquiry

Send the full code, not the shell — M25 alone does not identify a part in this family. Add the quantity, whether you need a plug, a socket or the pair, and the cable diameter you will terminate. Those four lines are enough to confirm the closest published model or quote the nearest variant.
